The Westports Malaysia Dragons outlasted the Formosa Dreamers behind an impressive team effort, 85-77, at the 2019 Malaysia MABA International Basketball Invitation.

Both teams had started the game hot with the home team leading 9-8 after six minutes, as Amir Bell and William Artino powered the Dragons to a five-point lead at the end of first quarter over their fellow ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) team from Taiwan. Formosa, who played without Jerran Young, trailed by 13 points at the half.

Dreamers guard Wu Sung Wei displayed his maturing skill set by cutting the deficit to just 10 points, before teammate Jet Chang scored six late points late to cut the deficit to 51-60 at the end of third quarter.

Both Bell and Artino got into foul trouble early in the second half, but the local Malaysian players were able to maintain some momentum going into final quarter.

Artino banked in 15 points on his own early of the final period to take another double-digit lead for the Dragons and finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds, and two steals as the 2015-16 ABL champions eventually held on to win the game with an eight-point margin. Bell added 15 points and five assists, while promising local Tem Zhen Jie added 12 points to this victory.

The Dreamers’ locals stepped up in this game, however, the Taiwanese-based team only had a 24.2% of perimeter shooting as a combined unit. Jet Chang led the team with 14 points and three assists. Yang Chin-Min and Kenneth Chien added 11 points respectively.
