After foregoing the 2019 Vietnam Basketball Association (VBA) season, Chris Dierker will be reuniting with the Saigon Heat for its upcoming ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) campaign.
With the additions of two-time World Import MVP Christien Charles, and forwards Gary Forbes and Sam Thompson completing its trio of world imports, the focus on the Saigon Heat’s 2019-20 ABL roster has shifted towards its local lineup, with its most recent move coming via the re-signing of Chris Dierker.
During his rookie ABL campaign, the Vietnamese-American Dierker quickly established himself as an indispensable piece of the Saigon Heat rotation, averaging 9.0 points and 7.1 rebounds in nearly 30 minutes of action per contest last season.
Despite skipping the most recent iteration of Vietnam’s domestic professional league, the Heat made his retention one of the team’s top priorities heading into 2019-20. As a 6-foot-7 forward, the Madonna University alumnus offers an impressive combination of size and athleticism, premiums for a local-designated roster spot, in a player pool not overly deep at the position.
Before joining the Heat in preparation for the ABL’s tenth season, Dierker will have an opportunity to fine-tune his abilities as a member of the Vietnam Men’s National Basketball Team at the upcoming 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines, where he will joined by fellow Heat local Tam Dinh, along with a handful of other players who are projected to be on Saigon’s roster once it’s ABL season begins.
In addition to Dinh and Dierker, the Heat also recently added 2019 VBA Heritage Player of the Year and fan favorite Vincent Nguyen, creating what is looking to be a formidable local lineup.
The Heat are set to begin their upcoming campaign January 3 in a home game against the visiting Mono Vampire following the conclusion of the 2019 SEA Games.
