The Westports Malaysia Dragons were able to snap their six-game losing streak by defeating the BTN CLS Knights Indonesia, 89-84, on their home floor.

In an exciting game that came down to the final minute, the Dragons started the game on fine form with Nnanna Egwu scoring 11 first quarter points to build an 11 point lead going into the final minute of the quarter.

Maxie Esho and Doug Herring Jr were able to capitalize on the Dragon’s defensive lapses to close the first on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to six.

The Knights kept up the run, starting the second quarter on a 10-1 run to take the lead thanks to a three pointer by Indonesian American Brandon Jawato. The Dragons began to find their stroke from beyond the arc, hitting four three pointers to regain the lead and stretched it to eight before allowing the Knights to once again close the quarter on a 7-2 run capped by a Wong Wei Long lay up to ensure the Dragons only take a one possession lead at the break.

The third quarter began to show a sense of familiarity with the past two quarters as the Dragons once again built a comfortable lead  before allowing the Knights to make a run late in the quarter. This time however, the Knights were able to take the two point lead going into the final quarter off a 14-3 run capped by a Doug Herring Jr layup.

With Winston Shepard in foul trouble, the early part of the fourth quarter was the Jonathan Wong show, as the Singaporean born guard, took the scoring responsibility on his shoulders for the Dragons, scoring nine straight points to regain the lead for the Dragons.

A pair of made free throws by Nnanna Egwu gave his team a seven point lead with four minutes remaining. However, just like the previous three quarters, the Knights kept pushing and eventually tied the game 84 apiece with less than a minute remaining off another Doug Herring Jr layup.

The final hero of the day turned out to be resident import Chris Eversley as he sank a clutch three pointer at the ensuing play to force the Knights timeout.

Off the timeout, Eversley made the crucial steal off the inbound pass and rushed up the floor to sink the game clinching layup to seal the 89-84 victory for the Dragons.

The Dragons’ lead performer was Eversley with 24 points and 8 rebounds while Jonathan Wong scored an impressive 22 points. Winston Shepard (17 points, 15 rebounds) and Nnanna Egwu (15 points, 10 rebounds) logged double doubles for the game.

The Knights’ efforts were led by Maxie Esho with 27 points and 10 rebounds, and Doug Herring Jr who logged 19 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. The game was also a landmark game for Esho, who scored his 1000th ABL career point.

The Dragons next face the Formosa Dreamers on the road on the 17th of February, while the BTN CLS Knights Indonesia, now on a three-game losing streak, will attempt to bounce back against Mono Vampire on their home floor on the 16th of February.
