The Westports Malaysia Dragons finish their season at a high, as they upset the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) leaders Formosa Dreamers, 97-96.

It took a last second tip-in from Yek Liang Chuan off a missed jumper from Nnanna Egwu to steal the victory for the Dragons, who snapped their three-game skid to end the season.

After a close first quarter affair between the two teams, Will Artino helped lead the Dreamers to a 14-3 run late in the second period as the visitors built their biggest lead to that point at 14 points.

However, the Dragons’ Winston Shepard, who had been scoreless up to that point, scored six-straight points to help spark a mini-run that cut their deficit down to seven to enter the halftime break.

The Dragons refused to bow down and continued to put up a fight despite trailing by as much as 17 at one point in the third quarter, setting up the opprtunity to win it at the end.

Chris Eversley led all scorers with 32 points to go with eight rebounds, while fellow imports Nnanna Egwu and Winston Shepard also added 18 and 17 markers each in the win.

The hero of the game Yek also shone bright for the Dragons as he finished with 17 points.

Will Artino scored 27 points for the Dreamers, while Malcolm Miller added 21. Tevin Glass and local guard Kenny Chien also chipped in with 18 and 14 points in the loss.

The Dragons, who showed some promise early in the season, will be missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons since winning their only ABL title in the 2015-16 season.

Meanwhile, the top seeded Formosa Dreamers still hold homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs, and are set to make their postseason debut against last season’s runners-up Mono Vampire Basketball Club.
