The Formosa Dreamers became just the second team to hand San Miguel Alab Pilipinas a loss this season after securing a 73-72 victory in the clutch.
Formosa replicated the feat pulled off by the Westports Malaysia Dragons just a few days ago, sinking the defending ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) champions via a game-winning three by Lee Hsueh Lin with a little over second remaining.
Rookie Ethan Alvano had just drained what would have been the winning triple for the home team with five seconds to go, prompting the Dreamers to call a timeout and draw the actual deciding shot.
The Dreamers led by as much as 15 points midway through the third quarter before the league’s top team slowly chipped away.
Alab Pilipinas import PJ Ramos was ejected from the game with 8:27 remaining in the first half after arguing a non-call when Tevin Glass inadvertently poked him in the eye. Reigning local MVP Bobby Ray Parks was also limited to 22 minutes of play after suffering from a cut between the eyes.
Meanwhile, Formosa played without their best player Will Artino and key local Tien Lei, both sitting out with ankle injuries. Glass led the charge with 24 points and nine rebounds, while Malcolm Miller added 13 markers. Locals Lee Hsueh Lin and Chen Shih Nien combined for 18 points.
Renaldo Balkman topscored with 27 points to go with 16 boards. Caelan Tiongson added 15 points and 13 boards, while Ethan Alvano flirter with a triple-double after notching 11 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists.
The Formosa Dreamers return to action on the road on January 16 when they visit the CLS Knights in Indonesia, while Alab Pilipinas return home to face the co-leaders Macau Black Bears on the 18th.
