San Miguel Alab Pilipinas continues to make roster moves leading up to their fourth year in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL), after a relatively quiet offseason.
The Philippine club is making another massive signing by bringing back Puerto Rican forward Renaldo Balkman, after first sending shockwaves around the league by signing one of the best point guards in the Southeast Asian basketball circuit in Jason Brickman. Apart from Brickman, Alab Pilipinas also added Filipino-American Jeremiah Gray into the roster.
While the team lost three-time local MVP Bobby Ray Parks Jr. to the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), part of the core of their 2018 championship team will be making a return as Balkman joins forward Lawrence Domingo as the team’s latest signings.
Named 2017-18 Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Balkman helped lead a formidable Alab Pilipinas team that won the ABL title two seasons ago. For the upcoming season, he could possibly team up with a returning Justin Brownlee, reuniting the duo who is regarded by many as the best one-two punch in league history.
Balkman was again an integral part of the team last season, finishing with an impressive 25.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.2 blocks, while also shooting 57 percent from the field per game.
The team will look to make a return to championship contention after an early quarterfinals exit during the previous playoffs, as they were swept by Hong Kong Eastern in two games despite finishing the regular season as the second-seeded team.
San Miguel Alab Pilipinas will have a little over a month left to prepare as the 2019-20 season of the ABL is set to tip off around mid to late November.
