The Singapore Slingers used their signature pesky defense to shut down the visiting Macau Black Bears in a 98-88 win. 

Slingers imports John Fields and Xavier Alexander gave their team an early eight-nothing lead, while the Black Bears were not able to find their shooting touch, missing all seven of their shots in the first four minutes of the game. It was Macau’s Anthony Tucker who broke the drought by scoring their first point from the charity stripe.

Singapore continue their effective transition game to further extended their lead into 12 points, but both Alexander and Young earned two personal fouls quick at the end of first quarter.

The Black Bears finally found their confidence at the beginning of second quarter, but Fields and Delvin Goh continued to dominate in the paint. Goh once again made another tough and-one basket down low to extend the lead to 18 at the 5:30 mark. To make the situation worse, Ryan Watkins got his fourth personal foul and forced to sit down before teammate- Mikh McKinney added four quick points in the following possessions.

Fields and Goh combined for 32 points, 10 rebounds and 6 dimes. The home team also managed to moved the ball effectively, by recorded 16 assists in the first twenty minutes of action.

Macau’s Nathan Yu fired a shot from deep to start the second half for the Black Bears, but their poor defense continue to allowed Slingers to make a quick 8-0 run with their transition game. The lead was as much as 21 points to Slingers at one point after Young throw down one more powerful dunk after a cut from baseline.

While the Black Bears managed to cut the lead, but Alexander made a tough mid range to ended third quarter in 77 to 61. However, Watkins got his last personal foul at the beginning of fourth quarter, and Slingers capitalised it for the rest of the quarter. Tucker and McKinney didn’t back up but showing their fighting spirit throughout the quarter, which the latter swished in two shots from deep to cut the lead within 15 points.

The Slingers finished the game in 98 to 88, where Fields contributed 32 points, nine boards, seven assists and two steals in a winning effort. Although Young exited the game with five fouls, but managed to dropped 12 points, including few highlight plays. Additionally, the Singaporean locals put up a show by adding 38 points and 21 rebounds for the victory.

As Watkins unable to contest against the opposing big guys, the usual reliable center only had 11 points and 16 rebounds. The team’s back-court duo in McKinney and Tucker both scored 26 points a piece.

On the 9th of December, the Slingers will go up against Macau Wolf Warriors in OCBC Arena. On the other hand, the Black Bears will look to forget this tough loss by playing against the CLS Knights on their home floor on 2nd of December.
