Last season’s bottom team Wolf Warriors completed their cast of imports as officially reported by the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).

After a disappointing debut season, the Zhuhai-based club team hired experienced head coach John Todd Purves to lead the squad for the upcoming season, and has added the import trio of Doug Herring, Steve Thomas, and Julian Boyd.

Purves, who has won an ABL championship with the Indonesia Warriors in 2012, decided to add seasoned veterans into the team that can help them on and off the court.

Fresh off a championship run with the BTN CLS Knights Indonesia last season where he averaged 17.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game, Herring will once again be expected to play an instrumental role with the Chinese squad.

The 6’3” point guard will be relied on with his ability to play on-ball defense and his potent offense will be extremely valuable to his new team.

Meanwhile, 38-year-old veteran center Steven Thomas, who previously played under coach Purves multiple times, is also joining the Wolf Warriors. Standing at a hulking 6-foot-8, the former two-time ABL champion 38 has been regarded as an outstanding paint protector, allowing him to win the 2012 Defensive Player of the Year.

Completing the team’s world import trio is Julian Boyd, who last played for KR Basket of the Urvalsdeild Karla in Iceland. The 29 year-old American forward averaged 22.5 points and 9.9 rebounds, eventually led KR Basket to win the championship to go with multiple individual awards including Foreign Player of the Year.

Joining local superstar center Cai Chen, the three additions are expected to help the Wolf Warriors make a playoff bid in the 2019-2020 ABL campaign.
