Westports Malaysia Dragons will be participating in the 2019 MABA Matrix Agong Cup, Malaysia’s annual domestic basketball championship tournament.
Malaysia’s first professional basketball team is set to play in Division 1, where it will battle against Negeri Sembilan, Perak, NS Matrix, and Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM) for a chance to move directly into the tournament’s bracket stage.
The top two teams from Division 1 will automatically earn berths into the semifinals, while the bottom two teams will have to play against Division 2’s top two teams to determine who fills out the final two semifinal spots.
After receiving a promotion from Division 2 last year, the Dragons will be looking to stop defending champion Negeri Sembilan from dominating the national scene for a fourth straight year.
Below is the Dragons’ official roster for Agong’s Cup 2019, which features several key local players from the team’s previous ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) campaign.
Coming off his rookie ABL season, Chin Cheng Wah is expected to carry more responsibilities for the team. The 6’0″ guard will be tasked with being a defensive bulldog against opposing guards, while fellow teammate Tan Wei Long should prove to be another key player for the Dragons in challenging for this year’s throne.
A returning Kuek Tian Yuan looks to be the squad’s primary scoring option despite coming back from a long-term injury. As a sharpshooting big man, Kuek averaged 10 points while shooting 39 percent during his last stint with the Dragons during the 2017-18 ABL season.
Team veteran Loh Shee Fai will be suiting up for Miri Firehorse in Division 2, and 22-year-old rookie Yek Liang Chuan will be returning to play for Negeri Sembilan.
The 2019 Agong’s Cup is set to start August 25 and lasts until September 1.
