The Indonesian Men’s Basketball National Team dug deep in their opening match at the 2019 William Jones Cup, holding off the University of British Columbia (Canada), 80-70.

The Canadian university still had a six-point lead after three closely contested quarters, but appeared to have ran out of gas late as they missed 16 of their 20 shot attempts in the final quarter.

A spirited rally led by point guard Arif Hidayat allowed Timnas to swoop back in to reclaim the lead and hold on to a ten-point win at the buzzer.

Reigning Indonesian Basketball League (IBL) MVP Kaleb Ramot Gemilang led his team with 18 points, five rebounds, and three assists, while lone import CJ Giles added 15 markers and eight boards.

Hidayat scored 11 points, including clutch three-pointers and two free throws to ice the game. M. Hardian Wicaksono and Mei Joni combined for 23 points off the bench for Indonesia.

Manroop Clair led the UBC Thunderbirds with 22 points coming off six-made threes, while Patrick Simon and Grant Audu added 14 markers each in the loss.

Indonesia faces a daunting task in their second assignment in the 2019 William Jones Cup as they are set to battle West Asian powerhouse Jordan tomorrow at 13:00, still at the Changhua County Gymnasium in central Taiwan.
