The San Miguel Beermen thwarted a resilient Ryukyu Golden Kings squad, 101-92, at the East Asia Super League Terrific 12 tournament.
It was the Dezmine Wells show in Macau, as the Beermen import led all scorers with 42 points off 55 percent shooting from the floor, helping the reigning Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) champions keep the defending the Okinawa-based team at bay.
San Miguel led for most of the game, but Ryukyu kept fighting, trailing by just four points early in the final period. However, they had little answer for Wells, who scored 11 in the payoff period.
Three players finished in double-figures for the Beermen, including Terrence Romeo with 18 points, and import Lester Prosper with 15. Paul Zamar also chipped in with nine points off the bench.
On the other hand, the Golden Kings’ lone import Demon Brooks tallied 34 points and 11 boards. Ryuichi Kishimoto added 12 points but had an off-shooting night, making only 28 percent of his shots. With the loss, the erstwhile Terrific 12 titlists Ryukyu bow out of the competition after two consecutive losses.
San Miguel improves to 2-0, and advances to the knockout semifinal and is set to face the Liaoning Flying Leopards of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) on Saturday, September 21, at 1900H (+8GMT) at the Tap Seac Multi-sports Pavilion in Macau, China SAR.
