FIBA has announced that the FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) will be staged in India sometime in March 2020.

A total of six tickets to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be awarded to the winners of the qualifying tournament, which will be organized by the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) and FIBA, to be held at a yet-to-be-determined location.

The OQT is set to feature 20 teams from each gender, and will qualify the top three teams for both men’s and women’s tournaments to the Summer Olympics next year.

Japan, as host nation of the quadrennial games, can automatically qualify either their men’s or women’s team. In addition, the remaining of the 40 participating teams are qualified via the FIBA 3×3 Federation Ranking (taking into account universality criteria) and the results of the FIBA 3×3 World Cup 2019 (the medalists).

The Philippines Men’s Team (with 8,153,226 Federation points) remain the only Southeast Asian squad that has a chance to qualify for the OQT, but needs to stay within the top 24 teams by the end of the month. They currently stand at 22nd, dropping one spot from their previous ranking.

3X3 basketball, which will make its debut at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, will feature 8 teams from men’s and women’s teams and will take place in the Aomi Urban Sports Venue on July 25-29, 2020.
