Thailand’s Mono Vampire Basketball Club is eager to better their showing from the previous year as they are set to host the 2018 edition of the FIBA Asia Champions Cup.
Finishing sixth place among ten teams in 2017, Mono Vampire impressed a lot of spectators after notching wins against Sareyyet Ramallah of Palestine and Taiwan Super Basketball League champions Dacin Tigers, while also pushing Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas in two close contests.
During the past year, the Thai club continued their winning ways in their domestic basketball scene after winning the Thailand Super Basketball League (TBSL) title and the making it to the Finals of the Thailand Basketball League (TBL). They also finished as runners-up to San Miguel Alab Pilipinas in a gruelling seven-game series during the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) Finals.
Mono Vampire qualified for this year’s Champions Cup after sweeping the competition and winning the gold in the SEABA Qualifiers, and then later placing second in the East Inter-Sub Zone Qualification round.
As hosts of the tournament, they were able to choose which group they will be placed in. They opted to be placed in Group B together with the Meralco Bolts (Philippine Basketball Association representatives), Alvark Tokyo (2017–18 B.League Japan champions), and Lebanon Sporting Al Riyadi Beirut (West Inter-Sub Zone Top 2).
The other group will consist of the Liaoning Flying Leopards (Chinese Basketball Association champions), the Seoul SK Knights (Korea Basketball League champions), Chinese Taipei’s Pauian Archiland (East Inter-Sub Zone winner), and Iran’s Petrochimi Bandar Imam BC (West Inter-Sub Zone winner).
Local standouts Darongphan Apiromvilaichai, Teerawat Chantachon, and Chitchai Ananti are expected to rejoin long-time Mike Singletary in the tournament. Jason Brickman, who suffered a quadricep injury, will be out of action and will be replaced my former Central Michigan standout Marcus Keene.
The 27th staging of the annual club tournament featuring the top professional teams from the region was originally meant to be held in a city in China, but was moved to the Thai club team’s home arena.
Mono Vampire will open their 2018 FIBA Asia Champions Cup campaign against the Meralco Bolts on September 27 at 15:30 (+7 GMT) on September 27 at the Stadium 29 in Nonthaburi, Thailand.
