The KL Dragons Basketball Academy continued their fine run with a 71-57 over the new Verve Club.

The first quarter began with Verve import Chadrack Lufile using his poweful inside offense to give them an early 7-1 lead. John Ng gave the Dragons a much needed basket with the hoop and the harm  at the 6:30 mark for the Dragons first field goal of the game . What followed was a 3 point shootout which the Dragons had the slight edge on as both teams traded basket in a closely even contest. The 1st quarter went to the Dragons 20-18 with Foong Ming Joe blocking a strong attempt by Verve local big man Fong Yen Yee at the end of the first preserving the lead for the Dragons.

The second quarter saw the Verve start with a 7 point run with youngster, Tan Wei Jie getting fouled on a 3 point attempt making all 3 FTs. An unfortunate hamstring injury to Verve captain, Wee Chuan Chin at the 7:12 mark of the second quarter right after he made a 3 pointer, sent him out of the game at that point.  He would return later in the game. The Dragons took advantage of his absence going on their own scoring run taking the lead at the 2:46 mark from a running floater from Syahrul Ridzwan . Last night’s top scorer for Verve, Lee Chien Chung finally made his first baskets of the game with two consecutive jumpers late in the second. It would be the Dragons though, who took the lead into the half with Fil Am gunner, Kyle Toth scoring his 3rd 3 pointer of the game, preserving the Dragons lead. The score at the half would be Dragons 38 Verve 36.

Coming from his hot 3 point shooting last night, Dan Eves got the Dragons going in the 3rd with a 3 pointer which was quickly answered by Tan Wei Jie for the Verve. A strong zone defense left the Verve unable to get bucket leading to a 11-0 Dragons run before Lufile made a basket to break the run. Dragons would then go another run stretching the lead to 15 before Verve’s American import, Daniel Camps made a breakaway dunk to cut the lead. The Dragons would remain calm to end the quarter with a 11 point lead, finishing the 3rd quarter 58-47 to the Dragons.

The fourth quarter  began with the Dragons furiously stamping their intentions to close out the game with a 9-0 run highlighted by yet another Tung Chee Keong behind the back pass to Eves for the basket. Fong Yen Yee would break the run with 5 straight points . The Dragons did not let up and maintained a steady pace to the game. Youngster, Phan Wee Chen showed his incredible leaping ability for the Dragons , pestering Verve’s imports and grabbing key rebounds for the Dragons capped with the final basket for them. Verve would close the game with a 6 point run but it was too late. Dragons closed off the game 71-57 for their second victory.

The Dragons used their smart positioning to out rebound the larger Verve 51-37, grabbing 22 offensive rebounds, earning 24 second chance points which were key to their victory.
