Filipino guard Jeff Viernes will be making his long-awaited return to the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) after he officially signed with the Globalport Batang Pier for the upcoming conference.

The 28-year-old guard secured a release from the Phoenix Fuel Masters almost exactly a year ago after being sanctioned by the team for playing “ligang labas” (comparable to a pro-am tournament) without consent from the team, and has since been playing in local semi-professional leagues and in overseas tournaments in Malaysia, China, and Thailand.

“I’m very thankful to coach Pido (Jarencio) and the GlobalPort management for this opportunity,” said Viernes in Filipino. “Also to my agent Danny Espiritu, and coach Rex Manansala who are always there to mentor me in my basketball career.”

Viernes last played as one of their heritage imports for Hitech Basketball Club in the Thailand Basketball Super League (TBSL) Finals, where they finished as runners-up to eventual champions Mono Vampire.

The 5’8” point guard out of St. Clare College continued to express his excitement for his second chance in the premiere Filipino league, promising to make good of the opportunity.

“I’m very excited to get another change come back and play in the league, and hopefully this time I can perform and help our team win games,” shared Viernes.

Viernes is set to make his debut with the GlobalPort Batang Pier when they play against Talk N Text Katropa when the PBA Commissioner’s Cup opens on April 22nd.
