The Indonesian Women’s National Team routs defending champions Malaysia, 70-59, to take home the bronze medal at the basketball tournament of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Malaysia, previous winners of thirteen women’s basketball tournament titles at the biennial meet were heavy favorites to recapture the gold medal until suffering a close defeat at the hands of hosts Philippines just a day ago.
The defending champhions started the game on a mission, but started to lose momentum and their grip on the lead late in the second quarter as the Indonesian defense kept wearing them down.
Malaysia was also outrebounded by their Indonesia, 57-30. One of the most notable was guard Henny Sutijono, who grabbed a total of 12 rebounds (five offensive) despite only finishing with five points.
After trailing by double-digits early in the game, Indonesia took their first lead of the game with 1:58 remaining in the second quarter after two made free throws by Sophia Gabriel. They went into the halftime break with a 38-33 lead and never looked back.
Indonesian center Gabriel Sophia posted a double-double of 17 points and 17 boards, while Clarita Antonio and Yuni Anggraeni combined for 25 markers. On the other hand, Yap Fook Yee led the Malaysian women with 15 points, while Tan Pei Jie and Kalaimathi Rajintiran added 13 and 10 points, respectively, in the loss.
