On Monday, the VBA announced the first ever three team trade in the league’s short history. The trade involved the Saigon Heat, Danang Dragons and Hanoi Buffaloes. The Heat unloaded 2016 Local MVP Lê Ngọc Tú to the Buffaloes and received Danish-Vietnamese forward Tim Waale from the Dragons, while the Dragons pick up Huỳnh Khang and Huỳnh Thanh Tâm from the Buffaloes.
Ngọc Tú started in all of the Heat’s games during the 2017 season. He averaged 13.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. His performance led to his addition to the Heat’s ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) roster, though he saw very limited minutes. Prior to the trade, there were rumors that Ngọc Tú was unhappy during contract negotiations with the Heat. He was named to the team’s Protected List but was unable to agree to a contract. The Heat selected him in the second round of the draft but it’s reported they still had issues agreeing to a contract.
With this news and the rumors of David Arnold’s imminent move from Saigon, it will be interesting to see the roster the Heat will open the 2018 season with.
