Eduard ‘Landslide’ Folayang fell early to Lightweight legend Eddie ‘Underground King’ Alvarez in the semifinals of the Lightweight World Grand Prix at ONE: Dawn of Heroes.
The Filipino hero Folayang started the fight aggressively with his spinning attacks and with damaging leg kicks, but once Alvarez was able to get him down on the floor, things went downhill really fast for the local fan favorite.
Seemingly at an early disadvantage, Alvarez successfully baited Folayang to the mat and exposed his flawed submission defense, making him tap out with a rear naked choke at the 2:16 mark of the opening round to silence a stunned Manila crowd.
Earlier in the night, three of Folayang’s Team Lakay stablemates also suffered defeats: Edward Kelly fell to Xie Bin in the featherweight preliminary match, lightweight Honorio Banario dropped an unanimous decision to Dae Sung Park, and flyweight Geje Eustaquio got knocked out by Yuya Wakamatsu.
The only saving grace tonight for the team was Danny Kingad’s split decision victory over Reese McLaren in the Lightweight World Grand Prix Semifinal, setting up a blockbuster Final match with Demetrious Johnson.
With the victory, Eddie Alvarez advances to the Final where he is set to battle Saygid ‘Dagi’ Arslanaliev at ONE: Century on October 13 at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.
