KL Dragons 67 Verve Club 65

The KL Dragons breathed a huge sigh of relief as they hanged on to defeat Verve Club 67-65 to pick up their third victory in a row. The game would be close at the half with the lead only being by two to the Dragons. The Dragons would then begin to pull away towards the end of the third quarter building a double digit lead that they would maintain until the final three minutes of the game.

The veteran duo of Verve, Soo Eng Heng and Wee Chuah Chin told then take over the game with a combined scoring of eleven straight points to cut the lead to three with 41 seconds remaining including three three pointers. What followed would be a moment of frustration for the Dragons as new signing, Chin Cheng Wah allowed Soo to make an easy steal from him in the backcourt giving Soo an easy layup which made it a one point game with 29 seconds remaining.

With the game on the line, Chin took it upon himself make amends for his earlier mistake. He would be given the responsibility to make the final basket. Despite seeing his attempt rim out, Chin was quick to force a jump ball, challenging Verve’s Ng Zhen Hong for the rebound, giving the possession back to the Dragons. The Dragons would be able to run out the clock with Chin making one final free throw to seal the game.

The player of the game would be Chin who made an impressive debut scoring 20 points.

Melaka 96ers 69 Farmco Knights 66

Melaka 96ers pulled off the the biggest comeback victory of the season so far, clawing their way back from being down by 16 points in the third quarter to defeat the Farmco Knights 69-66. They would earn the win without their leading scorer, Tan Wei Jie who was nursing a minor injury.

Farmco were only able to score seven points in the fourth quarter and lost the lead for good at the 3:47 mark after a defensive lapse by Wong Chin Yong gave Chee Li Wei an easy layup. Farmco would keep it close but costly turnovers allowed Melaka to seal the game through free throws made by their youngsters Tan Yee Fan and Lee Hong Ming. Tan and Lee were also crucial in a double team defensive effort on Choo Wei Hong which led to a crucial turnover

Farmco would have one last effort to tie the game but Lee Kwong Fai was unable to convert the three point attempt at the buzzer

Melaka were led by the inspirational play of their captain, Li Wei who finished with a double double of 14 points and 10 rebounds

PRG Warriors 64 New Ampang Youth Club 61

In yet another close encounter, PRG Warriors prevailed 64-61 in an overtime victory over NAYC. This would be NAYC’s second straight overtime game, only this time the result did not go in their favor

PRG would mount an impressive comeback with NAYC leading by eight with four minutes remaining in fourth quarter after a basket by Lee Jia Sheng. That would be the beginning of the Liew Kar Choon show for PRG as their leading scorer, took over the game with 10 straight points tying the game at the 1:04 mark. NAYC would make the mistake of fouling Tong Wen Keong in an off the ball incident at the same time as Liew made the bucket. Despite Tong missing the free throw, Thea Zhong Shin would grab the offensive rebound and make the putback basket for PRG to give them the lead. NAYC would still be able to tie the game with seven seconds remaining through Jia Sheng sending the game into overtime

Overtime would be a neck and neck affair with both teams trading baskets until John Wong Khai Chiek made the decisive bucket for PRG with 37 seconds to go giving them a three point lead. NAYC were unable to tie the game thanks to stellar defensive work by Tong Weng Keong at the end of the game, forcing a crucial turnover by Syahrul Ridzuan Rosli.

The best player for PRG was Tan Wen Gio with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. This win would push PRG’s record to 4-1
