Mono Vampire continue to climb out of the cellars of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) after winning against playoff fixture Singapore Slingers, 87-84.
Mike Singletary showed the way for the home team, scoring a team high 25 points to fend off the visiting Singapore side and notch their first consecutive victory for the season.
The hosts jumped off to an good start and immediately built a double-digit lead at the 7:54 mark in the first quarter after a made layup from Singletary, and maintained it up until the quarter ended.
It continued in the second period as the visiting team struggled to crack a basket until the midway point of the quarter when Xavier Alexander finally scored for his team but found themselves already down by as much as 16 points. Singapore went into the halftime break trailing by 15, 54-39.
Mono Vampire sustained the momentum through 3 quarters, enjoyed the largest lead at 21 points and virtually punched their 4th victory of the season but the Slingers never went down without a fight.
The team from Singapore clawed their way back and gave a late scare for the Thai squad in the payoff period where a 10-1 scoring spurt was orchestrated to cut the lead to one with under five minutes remaining. But late game composure spelled the difference at the end when Singletary and Travis restored order to secure the win.
Aside from Mike Singletary, Romeo Travis and Malcolm White played well for Mono Vampire as well scoring 19 and 18 points respectively. Meanwhile, the Slingers offense was spearheaded by Xavier Alexander with 29 points and John Fields with 26.
Mono Vampire improves to 4-12, while the Singapore Slingers dropped to 9 wins and 7 losses and only a half game ahead of sixth placed CLS Knights Indonesia.
