Danny ‘The King’ Kingad advanced to the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Final after eking out a split decision victory over Australia’s Reece McLaren.
The semifinal bout between Kingad and McLaren proved to be an exciting battle inside of the Mall of Asia Arena late Friday evening with heavily exchanged strikes and submission maneuvers escaped with guile.
The Australian fighter was able to pit his Filipino counterpart into uncharted territory by employing multiple takedowns throughout the duration of the match, but Kingad persevered, managing to survive and escape every one of them.
When the fight stood back up onto its feet, Kingad poured on the strikes, which helped tip the scales of the judge’s scorecards back in his favor.
“Thank you to all of my countrymen. I feel so very happy you know because [I am] in the World Grand Prix, I’ve finished it and one more! Thank you so much Manila and ONE Championship, thank you,” the triumphant Filipino said during his post fight interview.
It didn’t take long for Kingad to learn who he would be facing in October, as Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson came out victorious via unanimous decision over Tatsumitsu Wada just one bout later in the Flyweight Grand Prix’s other semifinal matchup.
The upcoming encounter with one of MMA’s pound-for-pound kings will undoubtedly be Kingad’s toughest to date.
