Yosuke Saruta successfully stripped the strawweight title from Joshua Pacio at ONE Championship’s first event of 2019 on Saturday night in Istora Senayan, Jakarta.

The outcome was one which Team Lakay was not expecting to say the least, as the Japanese challenger outlasted the Filipino MMA star and was in attack mode all throughout the bout.

Right as the opening bell sounded, “Tobizaru” came flying into Pacio, attempting plenty of takedowns that tested and took away significant stamina from the “Passion.” In between takedowns, Saruta continued to press Pacio, with the two exchanging strikes.

Ultimately, it was Saruta who came out on top as he earned a close nod from the judges. Prior to the loss, Pacio had previously showed difficulty in dealing with Japanese fighters, as his first two tormentors were relatively from Japan.

In addition to the strawweight title fight, two other Filipinos also began their year in the lead-off event of the world’s largest martial art promotion.

Robin Catalan foiled the Indonesian party in Jakarta after displaying a masterful performance over home bet Stefer Rahardian in a strawweight MMA showndown en-route to a dominating unanimous decision victory.

Conversely, Team Lakay representative Edward Kelly was on the receiving end of a ground and pound beating at the hands of Singaporean youngster Christian Lee and was defeated via TKO in the first round of their featherweight clash.
